BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team weathered the wind, rain and two second-half Albion (Mich.) College goals en route to a 3-2 non-conference victory on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.
Once again, BW (3-1 overall) got on the scoreboard first when senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Jackson) worked the ball up the middle of the field and let off a pass to sophomore midfielder Alex Guido (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower), who scored her second goal in as many games. Also like yesterday's game against Oberlin College, Bender continued to create scoring opportunities for her teammates when she found sophomore midfielder Kaitlin McGuire (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) in the 16th minute for McGuire's first collegiate goal, giving the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. BW had many other opportunities to open up the game even further, taking 12 more shots in the period and two looks on goal.
An Albion (2-2-1) own goal opened up the second half scoring as the Yellow Jackets went up by three goals; however, the Britons made up for the mistake in the 54th minute when they finally netted their first goal in the game. With the rain and wind picking up throughout the half, BW continued to rifle off shots as the Briton goalie, Megan Bricely, made five saves. Albion finished off the scoring with 14 seconds left on the clock, bringing the final score to 3-2.
In the net, junior Academic All-OAC goalkeeper Emma Bruno (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) picked up her second win of the year as she made five saves on seven shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets doubled up Albion on shots 30-15 while Bricely outsaved Bruno 8-5.
BW wraps up its three-game home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when the Yellow Jackets host Wittenberg University in non-conference action at 7 p.m. inside Finnie Stadium.
