All-American Wrestler Jesse Gunter Honored by Ohio House of Representatives
BEREA, Oh. --- Baldwin Wallace University senior two-time NCAA Division III All-American and two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American wrestler Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry) was recognized and honored at the Ohio House of Representatives and Representative Anthony DeVitis of the 36th District in Columbus on June 24.

Gunter, who has placed in the top eight wrestlers (Division III All-American honors) and carries a 3.3 grade point average in education, was honored for his excellence both in the classroom. He was joined in Columbus by family and friends who helped him to celebrate the moment.  You can watch the video of the event at

Devitis a native of the Akron-Green area in Ohio is the Summit County representative in Gunter's district. He has been representing the 36th district since his election in 2012.

"This is a tremendous honor for Jesse, his family and friends, the wrestling program and Baldwin Wallace University," said Head Coach Jamie Gibbs, who led the Yellow Jackets to a school-record 17 victories and a 17-5 overall record. "Jesse embodies the philosophy of NCAA Division III athletics by being outstanding both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. We are very proud of Jesse."

This is not Gunter's first time being selected as an NWCA Scholar Athlete. The Dean's List student and three-time All-OAC competitor also was selected in 2014. The two-time OAC Wrestler of the Week placed third at the NCAA  Div. III National Tournament in 2014 and fourth in 2015.

Gunter, enterts his senior season with an 86-12 career mark and .905 winning percentage. His goals are to lead the Yellow Jackets to their first OAC wrestling title since 1973 and be the school's first national champion since 177-pounder Kevin Higgins in 1989.
