BW Wrestlers Finish Third at 27th Annual Summa Tourney

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling finished third of eight teams today (Saturday, February 2, 2013) at the 27th Annual BW John Summa Memorial Tournament inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets scored 81 points to place third behind Brockport State (N.Y.) who successful defended its team title with 122.5 points.  Waynesburg (Pa.) took second  with 111 points, Thiel (Pa.) placed fourth with 79.0 points, NCAA Division II Lake Erie took fifth with 78.5 points, Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) finished sixth with 65.5 points, Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) was seventh with 32.5 points and Ohio Northern was eighth with 17 points.

Highlighting the event for BW was freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry), who was the runner-up in his weight class after posting a record of 2-1. Gunter, who is ranked fifth individually in the latest NCWA (National Wrestling Coaches Association)/ Brute-adidas poll) improved to 27-2 but snapped his winning streak at 25 straight wins He won won by technical fall over Kevin O`Hagan of Brockport State, 17-0 and by major decision over Tyler Marlow of Brockport State, 11-2. Gunter fell in the championship match to Matthias Ellis of Brockport State, who was a national qualifier a year ago, in sudden victory, 6-4.

In addition to Gunter, freshman 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), freshman freshman 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward), junior 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), freshman 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and freshman 184-pounder Brian Fox (Dublin/Scioto) all placed in the top six.

Belford placed third as he went 6-1 and is now 22-16. He lost his first match won in a tie breaker to Karl Hiss of Washington and Jefferson, 4-2, and then went on to win his final six matches.  Belford won in tie breaker over Blake Heim of Thiel, 3-2, with pins over Somara Atkinson of Rochester Institute of Technology, 3:24 and Greg Kumer of Waynesburg, 6:03, in tie breaker over Martin Kisla of Waynesburg, 7-2, and won by decision over Eddie McBride of Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-2.  He captured third place by forfeit.

Fox finished fourth as he went 2-2 and improved to 7-15.  He won by decision over Matt Morian of Thiel, 6-4, lost to Cody Catalina of Waynesburg, won by pin over Kenny Alsop of Thiel, 2:43.  Fox lost the third place match to John Casper of Brockport State.

Chase placed fourth as he went 3-2 and is now 31-12. He won in sudden victory over Brandan Collins of Thiel, 6-4, and by decision over Sean Sercu of Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-2.  He lost his third match to Josh Etzel of Washington and Jefferson, 6-4.  Chase then won by decision over Eric Tuck of Waynesburg, 3-1, but fell in the third place match to Sam Lombardo of Waynesburg.

finished fifth as he went 4-2 and is now 19-16 overall.  He won by decision over Jerry Cramer of Thiel, 4-0, but fell in his second match to Jordan Dyer of Brockport State.  Taylor then won by major decision over Trevor Meyers of Washington and Jefferson, 15-5, and won by decision over Jake Vitolo of Waynesburg, 3-1.  He lost his next match of the day to Adam Matthews of Thiel by a final score of 13-7 and won his final match by pin over Shaun Lee of Ohio Northern, 2:26

placed sixth and went 3-3 to improve to 25-14. He won by tech fall over Bradley Haggerty of Brockport State, 18-2, but fell in his second match to Jordan Powell of Thiel.  Shapiro  then won by major decision over Colt Lovejoy of Ohio Northern, 12-3, and decision over Christian Baughman of Lake Erie, 9-4.  Shapiro lost to Brandon Howes of Ohio Northern in the consolation semifinals. He lost the fifth place match to Tyler Gargano of Ohio Northern.
BW is back in action next Tuesday, February 5 when it travels to Ada, Ohio to face 18th-ranked (NWCA Brute-adidas Division III national poll) Ohio Northern University in an Ohio Athletic Conference match inside the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets conclude the 2012-2013 season on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
