Phil Kuchta

Phil Kuchta wrapped up his first season as an assistant for the men’s basketball program at Baldwin Wallace University in 2018-2019.  During his first year at BW, Kuchta helped the Yellow Jackets win the prestigious Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title and advance to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division III National Tournament. 

This past season Kuchta helped coach two players to All-OAC honors and four other student-athletes earned Academic All-OAC accolades. Beating Mount Union in the 2019 OAC Championship Game, Kuchta helped the Yellow Jackets win its first OAC title since 2006.  Likewise, its win over Salisbury State (Md.) University in the 2019 NCAA Div. III National Tournament was BW’s first since 2006. 

During his first year at BW, Kuchta assisted in on-court coaching in practice, recruiting and evaluating student athletes, analyze game film and create and present scouting reports, and assist with all other managerial duties of travel and logistics. Kuchta also helped with summer shootouts and youth camp in 2019. 

Prior to BW, Kuchta has spent the last seven years as the Head Coach of the boys’ program at Elyria Catholic High school.  During his time there Kuchta nearly won 100 games after going 4-18 his first year,  finishing his tenure with 5 straight seasons of 12 wins or more and 4 consecutive.  In 2015 the Panthers won a conference championship in the West Shore for the first time in 12 years and then won another conference title two years later in the Great Lakes Conference.  Elyria Catholic also appeared in the districts in 4 out of the last 5 years.

Kuchta graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Education, majoring in Physical Education and a Master's of Education, majoring in Curriculum and Instruction - Educational Technology. Kuchta currently teaches Health, Physical Education, and Computer Science Principles after graduating from Cleveland State University.  Kuchta recently completed the “Sports Industry Essentials” Program from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Professional Studies. 

Kuchta is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and received an Honorable Discharge after serving 6 years active duty.

Phil Resides in Elyria and has two Children, Jake and Jordyn.
