BEREA, Ohio – Despite a career night from senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick), the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team dropped a conference contest to the University of Mount Union, 82-75 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW (7-5 overall, 3-2 OAC) was led by Quiring who scored a career and game-high 30 points while sinking a career-high seven three pointers. Freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) poured in 15 and secured a career-high seven rebounds. Senior forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) chipped in 10 and grabbed a game-high nine boards.
Mount Union (9-3 overall, 4-1 OAC) was led by junior forward Logan Hill, who tallied 18 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Collen Gurley pitched in 16 while freshman guard Chris Painter Jr. contributed 12. Senior guard Nathan Bower-Malone recorded 10 and grabbed seven rebounds.
BW drops to 85-59 in the all-time series with Mount Union, with the last contest coming last season when the Yellow Jackets defeated the Purple Raiders, 79-75 in the 2018-19 OAC Championship game.
Mount Union opened the contest with a 30-15 run over the first 13 minutes, before the Yellow Jackets trimmed the lead to 30-20 at 5:54 with a Quiring layup. BW closed the half on a 15-10 run to cut the Mount Union lead to 40-35.
The Yellow Jackets established their first lead of 50-49 at 12:51 with a 15-9 spurt to start the second half. Both teams traded baskets before they eventually tied at 55 off a Jack Lostoski (Uniontown/Lake) trey with 10:58 left in regulation. BW took a 59-58 advantage at 9:11 off two Mazzeo free throws, before a Purple Raider layup at 8:57 returned the lead to Mount Union. The Yellow Jackets tied the game up at 66 with a Quiring deep ball at the 6:13 mark. The Purple Raiders closed the game out with a 17-9 run and defeated BW with an 82-75 final.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Westerville, Ohio to square off with Otterbein University this Saturday at 2 p.m.
