CWRU Men Beat BW, 82-73, in University Circle

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior forward Dane McLoughlin scored a game-high 19 points as host Case Western Reserve University held off Cleveland cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University, 82-73, at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center. This was the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader.

A big key in the CWRU (1-0) win was making its last 12 foul shots over the final 7:51 to hold BW at bay in the second half. For the game, CWRU made 20 of 23 foul shots for the game for 87 percent compared to 16 of 25 for BW for 64%. In addition to McLouughlin, senior guard Julien Person had 14 points.

BW (1-1) was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) with 17 points, senior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hills, Fla./Nature Coast Technical) with 14 points, senior guard Justin Roth (Parma/ Senior) had 13 points and freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) had a career-high 11 points.

In the first half, BW gained an early, 3-0 lead at 19:41 when Crowe canned a three-pointer. CWRU scored 13 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 13-5 lead at 15:08 when senior center Connor Edel made a jump shot. The Spartan lead grew to 11 points on seven occassions with the last at 39-28 at 2:08 when junior guard Jimmy Holman made tw foul shots. Case outscored BW 7-3 the reaminder of the stanza to lead 46-31 at the intermission.

In the second half, CWRU built its largest lead at 57-41 at 16:05 when senior forward Brian Klements made a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play by making his foul shot. BW stung back to outscore the Spartans 10-3 to close the deficit to nine points for the second time at 13:21.  CWRU pushed its lead back to 68-53 at 7:51. Undaunted, BW came back and outscored Case 22-10 to cut the lead to five points on four separate occassions with the last at 78-73 with 26 seconds left when Crowe made a layup. But Person made the final four free throws of the game to give CWRU its win.

BW is back in action this Saturday, November 22 in the third game of a men's and women's basketball triple-header in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.  Earlier in the day, the Yellow Jacket (0-1) women conclude the BW Invitational with the consolation and championship games at 2 and 4 p.m.
