BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) and sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) each scored 12 points but the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Mount Union, 49-47, tonight (Wednesday, January 11, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. Ferrell, who scored a season-high, also grabbed a game-high and season-best tying nine rebounds.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders won their second straight game and their third in the last four games to improve to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the OAC.
Mount Union was led by freshman forward Stevie Griffin with a game-high 14 points, senior forward Jimmy Wood, the OAC leading scorer, with 13 and freshman guard Nate Jacubec added 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring, 1-0, when Payne split a pair of free throws at the 19:42 mark. B-W added to its lead, 4-0, when Krakowiak buried a three-pointer at 19:07. The Yellow Jackets continued the scoring attack, 5-0, when Payne once again split a pair of free throws with 18:06 remaining.
The Purple Raiders ended the 6-0 run, 6-3, when Wood connected on a three-pointer off the assist from junior guard Justen Little at the 16:04 mark.
B-W quickly responded by going on an 8-0 run to extend its lead, 14-3, on a three-pointer by sophomore Grant Fairhurst and baskets Ferrell, sophomore forward Aaron Selmek (Delaware/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) and Krakowiak with the last coming at 13:02.
Mount Union would cut into the lead, 14-7, on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Nate Jacubec and on a fast break layup by sophomore guard T. J. Gillespie with 10:37 left.
After exchanging a pair of three-pointers, the Yellow Jackets would outscore the Purple Raiders 12-10 over the remainder of the half to lead 26-17 at the intermission.
Mount Union opened the second half on a 5-0 run to cut the B-W lead down to four points, 26-22, on a basket by Jacubec and a trey by Griffin at 18:02.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a 4-0 run of their own, 30-22, on free throws by junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/Seminary) and a jumper by Krakowiak at 14:59.
B-W would extend its lead to 10 points, 40-30, on a layup by Payne at the 7:43 mark. The Purple Raiders would go on a 14-3 run to take their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Griffin with 3:16 remaining in the game.
The lead would change two times before the Yellow Jackets would tie the game, 46-26 when Ferrell split a pair with 53 seconds remaining.
Mount Union would take the lead for good when Griffin hit a pair of free throws, 48-46, at 17 seconds. B-W would have an opportunity to tie the game just four seconds later but Umbel split a pair of free throws cutting the lead to one point, 48-47. The Purple Raiders pushed the lead back up to two points, 49-46, when Little spilt a pair of free throws with four seconds left in the game. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to win the game but Umbel's three-point shot as time expired bounced off the rim.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, January 14 when they will travel to Ada to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University in the second game of a men's and women's OAC doubleheader in the ONU Sports Center at 4:00 p.m. Fans can listen to both the men's and women's game live on campus radio station WBWC 88.3 FM "The Sting" or via the internet at www.wbwc.com. The next home game is on Wednesday, January 18 when the team will welcome the Cardinals of Otterbein University to the Ursprung Gymnasium for an Ohio Athletic Conference game at 7:30 p.m.
