Heidelberg Beats BW, 52-20, in Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – Senior running back Cartel Brooks ran for 263 and five touchdowns as the Heidelberg University football team defeated visiting Baldwin Wallace University, 52-20, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Riesen Field inside Hoernemann Stadium. This was BW's (5-5, 4-5 OAC) last game of the season, but the Student Princes (8-2, 7-2 OAC) must now await a decision by the NCAA Division III Playoff Selection Committee to see if they are invited to the "Big Dance".

Heidelberg led 17-0 after one quarter, 31-7 at halftime and 45-7 after three periods.  The victory was the third straight for the Student Princes against the Yellow Jackets and closed their deficit all-time series advantage to 46-22. The series began in 1897 and the BW has played Heidelberg more than any other opponent.  The Student Princes had a 644-356 advantage in total offense including a 307-107 advantage on the ground. Heidelberg also sacked a pair of BW quarterbacks nine times.

The BW offense was led by junior quarterbacks Tyler Moeglin (Louisville/ St. Thomas Aquinas) and Robbie Plagens (Rocky River). Moeglin completed 8 of 12 passes for 129 yards before leaving with an injury in the third quarter. He was sacked six times. Plagens completed 13 of 19 aerials for 120 yards, but threw three interceptions and was sacked three times. The running game was led by junior Isaac Reed III (Lehigh Acres, Fla./ Lehigh) with 92 yards in 16 attempts. He also caught three passes for 27 yards to totaled 124 all-purpose yards. The top receivers were seniors Kyle Dunne (Rocky River) and Darryl Jones (Cleveland/ Villa Angela – St. Joseph). Dunne caught six passes for 103 yards and Jones grabbed six for 42 yards. The defense was led by senior cornerback Kevin Krakora (Avon) with a team-high nine tackles.

In addition to Brooks for Heidelberg, senior QB Michael Mees completed 23 of 40 passes for 337 yards with two TD's and one interception. The receiving corps was led by sophomore WR Nick DeLisa with six grabs for 81 yards. The defense was led by senior nose guard Ben Poirer and senior cornerback Tim Littles as each had a game-high 11 stops.

In the first quarter, Heidelberg gained a 7-0 lead at 12:49 when Brooks ran 24 yards for a touchdown and junior Stephen Smith kicked the point-after-touchdown to complete an 8-play and 60-yard drive in 2:11. The drive was sustained when the Student Princes converted a 3rd-and-16 from its own 34-yard line and a 4th-and-9 from the BW 35.

The lead grew to 14-0 at 8:45 when Brooks sped 51 yards to the end zone and Smith added the PAT to cap a 6-play and 75-yard drive in 1:54. Heidelberg led 17-0 at 2:25 when Smith booted a 26-yard field goal to cap an 8-play and 71-yard drive.

On the first play of the second quarter, BW cut the deficit to 17-7 at 14:55 when Moeglin ran one yard for a TD and junior PK Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) booted the PAT to cap an 8-play and 76-yard drive.

The Student Princes countered with a 7-play and 59-yard drive in 2:21 that culminated in a 6-yard TD pass from Michael Mees to brother and senior WR James Mees at 7:21. Smith's third PAT kick made it 24-7.  HU increased its lead to 31-7 thirteen seconds before halftime when Michael Mees threw a 4-yard TD pass to senior WR Donteea Dye and Smith booted the PAT to cap a 6-play and 49-yard drive in 51 seconds.

In the third quarter, Brooks scored his third TD of the game to extend Heidelberg's lead to 38-7 with 7:28 to go and Smith tacked on his fifth PAT kick. The score capped a 10-play and 76-yard drive.  He scored his fourth TD, made the score 45-7 and went over the 200-yard mark at 4:25 when he took a handoff and ran 76 yards to paydirt on the first play following an interception.

In the fourth quarter, Brooks scored his fifth TD of the game with 8:46 remaining and Smith added the PAT for a 52-7 lead.

BW earned its second TD of the game with 2:45 left when Plagens ran three yards to the end zone. Simonis added the PAT To make it 52-14.  The Yellow Jackets made it 52-20 and scored their final TD at 2:15 when senior backup RB Corey Padrutt (Rootstown) ran two yards to the end zone following a fumble recovery and long return by senior All-OAC defensive end Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River). Unfortunately Simonis' PAT kick was blocked. It was the only PAT he didn't convert this season after 35 successful attempts.
