No.16 BW Baseball Team Splits With Cross-Town Rival JCU

BEREA, Ohio  -- Junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference infielder/ pitcher Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) both hit and pitched the 16th-ranked (April 6 Division III national poll) Baldwin Wallace University baseball team to an OAC doubleheader split with Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at Heritage Field.  The Blue Streaks (19-6, 8-2 OAC) won the first game, 13-2, and the Yellow Jackets (17-6, 5-5 OAC) captured the nightcap, 18-4 in a rain-shortened six innings.

In the first game, JCU scored five runs in the top of the third inning and added four more in the fourth to build a 9-1 lead. BW made it 9-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Blue Streaks scored four more times in the eighth to lead 13-1, and BW scored its final run in the ninth.

At the plate, freshman catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Kettering Alter) was 2-for-3 with a run batted-in (RBI).

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) started and took the loss to fall to 3-1 this season. He was followed to the mound by senior Chuck Jones (Kettering/ Fairmont), who struck out seven batters in four innings of work, and freshman Nick Patrone (Bellaire), who whiffed two in one and one-third innings of action.

In the second game, BW received home runs from sophomore second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) and junior two-time All-OAC third baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) in the bottom of the third inning to lead 4-0. JCU scored three times in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. BW broke the game open with a 10-run fifth inning to grab a 14-4 lead. The Jackets added four more in the sixth to lead 18-4. Then the rains came.

At the plate, Zimmerman and senior All-American first baseman/ OF Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) led the way with four hits each. Zimmerman was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, homer and three RBI. Chontos was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI.

In addition, junior All-OAC designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, double, sacrifice fly and four RBI. Senior All-OAC shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Midpark) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Nieto had a homer, two runs scored and two RBI. Senior All-OAC RF Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) scored three runs.

On the mound, Zimmerman started and pitched all six innings and improved to 3-2 this season. He allowed five hits, four runs (three earned), struck out eight and walked four.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14 when BW hosts third place Ohio Northern University in an OAC twinbill at Heritage Field at 1 p.m. On Thursday, April 16, BW travels to Springfield, Ohio to play a rare evening game at non-conference rival Wittenberg University at 6 p.m.
