BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College second-year Head Baseball Coach Brian Harrison announced the 2011-2012 team award winners. Harrison's squad posted a school-record 27-13 mark this season.
The 2011 Yellow Jacket award winners are junior pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg), freshman first basemen Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North), junior outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute), junior first baseman Matt Kulick (Wilmot/ Navarre Fairless) and senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls).
Havens was the recipient of the Outstanding Pitcher Award for the second consecutive year. He compiled a 7-1 record with an 2.25 earned run average and struck out 63 batters in 52 innings pitched. He started nine games, completed three, had one individual shutout and combined for two others. Opponents batted just .226 against him. For his efforts, Havens was named as an All-Ohio Athletic Conference first-team performer. For his career, Havens has a 12-6 record. In 27 appearances, including 19 starts, he has five complete games, two individual and five total shutouts and has struck out 102 batters in 117 and two-third innings pitched.
Chontos was the recipient of both the Most Outstanding Freshman Player and Big Stick awards. The awards are based on his performance at the plate as well as on defense. He had a strong first season as he played in and started all 40 contests, batted .353 (54-for-153) with team-leading totals of 14 doubles, four home runs, 37 runs batted-in and a .526 slugging average. Chontos also scored 42 runs and had one triple and stole six bases in seven attempts and had a .425 on-base average. He was named to the All-OAC second-team.
Toughey has earned The Guy Fisher Award Academic Award of Excellence which is given to the baseball student-athlete who has the highest grade point average among major contributors to the program during a given season. In the classroom, Toughey, who maintains a 3.94 cumulative grade point average in B-W's 3:2 Master's of Accounting Program, excelled by posting a 3.92 G.P.A. for the fall semester of 2011 and a 3.83 G.P.A. during the spring of 2012. He is a Dean's List student, a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Sigma Alpha honor societies and a Jacket Scholar. Toughey has also been selected as a first-team CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 team, which qualifies him for the CAPITAL ONE Academic All-America ballot. As a sophomore in 2011, he was named to the 2011 CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District IV team and was named as an honorable mention All-OAC outfielder.
On the field this past season, Toughey played in and started all 40 games. He finished second on the team with a .377 batting average (57-for-151) and doubles (10), set a school single-season record with runs scored (53), led the team in base hits (57), walks drawn (21), stolen bases (23-for-23) and on-base average (.458). For his career, Toughey is hitting .326 (95-for-291) with 87 runs scored, 18 doubles, two triples, a homer, 37 RBI and is a perfect 34-for-34 in stolen base attempts. This season, he was named as second-team All-OAC performer.
Kulick was the winner of the Yellow Jacket Award. The Yellow Jacket Award is given annually to the exemplary baseball student-athlete who has demonstrated a year-round dedication to the team by displaying a positive attitude toward the game and his teammates and showing a strong work ethic and a style of unselfish play and leadership. Kulick, a first baseman, played in 12 games this season and batted .438 (7-for-16) with four runs scored, two doubles and four RBI. For his career, he has played in 28 games, including 10 starts, and is a .273 hitter (15-for-55) with eight runs scored, three doubles and 10 RBI. In the field,. he has committed just one error in 67 fielding chances.
Longhitano earned the Gold Glove Award as he played in all 40 games, started 39 and had his third straight solid season as a starter. He led the team in assists with 130, fifth in putouts with 54 and participated in 20 double plays. His .948 fielding average is considered outstanding for a Division III shortstop. Offensively, Longhitano was third in batting average at .361 (56-for-155), scored 33 runs, had six doubles, one homer and 27 RBI and was second with 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts. He also had a .419 slugging and .409 on-base average and struck out just eight times in 172 plate appearances (once every 21.5 at-bats). For his career, Longhitano played in 122 games, including 111 starts, had a .307 batting average (118-for-384) with 83 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, one homer, 55 RBI and 19 steals.
