NEW CONCORD, OHIO -- Junior closer Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) became the all-time saves leader in school history with 8 saves as the Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, March 31, 2012) at Mose Morehead Field.
The Fighting Muskies won the first game, 3-2 and the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 8-7.
With the split, B-W improves to 16-3 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Muskingum is now 7-10 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the second inning when freshman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) walked to the start the inning. Junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon) would come to the plate and hit a double to left centerfield to score Chontos (1-0). The Fighting Muskies would score two runs in the bottom of the second innings on four hits to take the lead, 2-1. B-W would add one more run in the top of the fifth inning on one hit to tie the game, 2-2. Muskingum would score the final and game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Yellow Jackets, 3-2.
At the plate, senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) and Yost. Longhitano went 2-for-3 while Yost went 2-for-3 as well with a double, one run-batted-in and one stolen base.
On the mound, junior right-hander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) went six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out seven batters.
In the second game, B-W scored seven runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Three of the runs in the inning were produced by Yost's bat, who hit a three-run homer to left field. Muskingum would score one run in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the bottom of the fourth (7-3). The Yellow Jackets would tack on one more and their final run in the top of the fifth inning. The Fighting Muskies would rally to pick up four more runs, but fall short to B-W, 8-7.
At the plate, Chontos, Yost and catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance) would prove much of the offensive attack. Chontos went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Yost would go 1-for-4 with three runs-batted-in, two runs scored, and a three-run homerun. Nordquist went 2-for-4 with one RBI, a double and a run scored.
On the mound, Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) started and went six and one third innings. Redovian gave up six runs (four earned), eight hits and struck out four Muskingum batters. Sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) would come in for one inning and give up three hits and strike out one batter. Tenley went one and two thirds innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits with 2 strikeouts.
B-W is back in action on Tuesday, April 3 when it travels to cross-town and OAC rival John Carroll University for an OAC doubleheader at Schweickert Field at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jacket home opener is on Wednesday, April 4 when they host cross-town and non-conference rival Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Field.
