Caballero Nets Five, BW Men’s Lacrosse Downs Wilmington
BEREA, OHIO – Senior midfielder Andy Caballero (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest) scored a season-high five goals and the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeated Wilmington College, 10-7, today in the program's first game at Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. Caballero's five goals also matched a team season-high.
The win is the second straight for the Yellow Jackets, who improve to 3-1. Wilmington falls to 3-4.
In addition to Caballero
, freshman attack Vinny Carson
(Cleveland/Benedictine) scored a goal and notched a game-high three assists. Freshman midfielder Steve Wozniak
(Strongsville/Padua Franciscan) matched Carson with three assists, and sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider
(Rocky River) and freshman attack Andrew Madden
(Lakewood/St. Edward) each registered an assist.
Junior attack Tim Hamm
(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) came off the bench to score his first career goal. Senior midfielder Kyle Sepesy
(Parma/St. Ignatius), junior midfielder Steve Humbert
(Liberty Township/Lakota East) and freshman midfielder Jake Opincar
(Middleburg Heights/Padua Franciscan) also scored goals off the bench.
Freshman Jalen Jackson led the Quakers with four goals and freshman Kirby Dearth scored three times and tallied an assist. Freshmen Alexander Gossard and Evan Osborne each had assists.
BW took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the first quarter after goals from Carson and Opincar, but Dearth and Jackson scored within a 20-second span to tie the game.
BW took a 4-2 lead to close the opening quarter after goals from Hamm and Caballero.
Cabballero scored twice in the second frame, including with eight seconds left before the whistle, and Jackson and Dearth each added a goal apiece as BW took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Dearth scored an unassisted goal at the 14:13 mark of the third quarter to pull the Quakers to within one, but Humbert and Caballero responded with goals of their own to increase BW's lead to 8-5.
Jackson scored again with 1:07 left in the third quarter and again at 13:13 of the fourth quarter to again pull Wilmington to within one at 8-7.
Sepesy and Caballero each added goals in the final period to ice the win.
BW won 12 of 19 face offs, including nine of 13 by Opincar, and outshot the Quakers by a 54-27 margin.
The Yellow Jackets also failed to clear the ball just once and held a 46-24 advantage in groundballs, led by junior defender Randy Grein
(Hudson), who matched a game high with six pick-ups.
Freshman Jake Harders
(Rocky River/St. Edward) logged all 60 minutes in goal and made six saves for the Yellow Jackets. Ian Hamilton collected 22 saves in 60 minutes of action for Wilmington.
BW returns to action Wednesday, March 27 at Trine (Ind.) University at 7 p.m. before returning to Berea for a 4 p.m. tilt against Franciscan University Saturday, April 6, in the second game of a women's and men's lacrosse doubleheader.
