Carson Has 10 Points in 21-12 Win Against Houghton College

MEDINA, Ohio – Freshman attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine) recorded 10 points and four Yellow Jackets notched hat tricks as the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team beat Houghton (N.Y.) College, 21-12, tonight (Friday, March 8, 2013) at Pinnacle Sports Complex in Medina, Ohio.

The win improves BW to 2-1, while Houghton falls to 0-2.

In addition to Carson, who scored three goals and had seven assists, freshman attack Andrew Madden (Lakewood/ St. Edward) scored five goals, and sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River) and senior midfielder Kyle Sepesy (Parma/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) had four goals each.  Junior midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/ Parma Padua Franciscan) scored twice and sophomore midfielder Chris Nurse (Westlake) each scored their first career goals.

The hat tricks were the first for Carson, Riemenschneider and Sepesy, and the second for MaddenCarson and Riemenschneider have each scored two or more goals in each of BW's first three games in school history. 

Tyler Kempney tallied a game-high seven goals for the Hilltoppers.

Carson scored at the 13:21 mark of the first quarter to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead, but Kempney scored two goals in less than five minutes and Houghton took a 2-1 advantage.  Both teams added three more goals to end the first period.

Houghton took a brief 6-5 lead after Sean Daigler scored an unassisted goal at the 14:11 mark of the second quarter, but BW erupted for six straight goals to close the first half and took an 11-6 lead into halftime.

Madden and Sepesy opened the second half with a pair of goals assists by Nurse and Carson, respectively, to extended the Yellow Jackets' lead to 13-6.  Houghton outscored BW, 4-3, over the remaining 11 minutes of the third quarter and cut the gap to 16-10. 

Daigler scored an unassisted goal at the 10:49 mark of the first quarter and Kempney added an unassisted tally at 9:03, but the 16-12 deficit would be the closest the Hilltoppers would come to capping a comeback.  BW then rattled of five consecutive scores, with two coming from Riemenschneider, to secure the victory.

Freshman Jake Harders (Rocky River/ St. Edward) logged all 60 minutes in goal, faced 28 shots, and made 13 saves.  He also collected four ground balls.

Gabriel Browning started in goal for Houghton and played the first 52 minutes and recorded 14 saves.  Josh Haingray played the last eight minutes of the game and made two saves.

BW won 19 of 31 faceoffs and held a 62-38 advantage in ground balls.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, March 16 when they host Wilmington College on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea at 4:00 p.m. in the first "true" home game in program history.
